From Myth to the Moon: Humanity’s Ascent to the Heavens
January 11, 2022
Some of the most ancient myths attempt to conceive what it would be like to soar across the sky. Indeed, few fantasies have captured the imagination of humankind as powerfully as the dream of flight, and for millennia the prospect of joining the birds among the clouds remained just that: a dream. In 1903, however, the Wright Brothers achieved the first sustained, controlled flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and in little more than a century since, aerospace technology has progressed at breathtaking speed. The Cradle of Aviation Museum, located just 10 minutes by car from our hotel, chronicles the astonishing story of humankind’s ascent to the heavens, and the major role that Long Island and Long Islanders have played in that story. During your visit, you’ll marvel at exhibits on the pre-history of manned aircraft, the Golden Age of Flight, the role of aviation in WWI and WWII, the Jet Age, space exploration, and more. For additional details on all this fascinating museum has to offer and to plan your visit, check out the official Cradle of Aviation Museum website here.
